Infographic I designed for the Kantar Information is Beautiful Awards food poisoning data challenge 2016.
The graphic was awarded first place in the static category of the competition.
"Andrew's entry was elegant and effective, revealing a distinct and clear breakdown of each dataset, alongside a strong visual approach and the use of several toilet pictograms! The final 'most lethal combination' was a crowning touch."

Only 15% of young people aspire to become a Scientist. This is part of the wider STEM crisis happening in the UK. Terrific Scientific is the BBC's new science campaign for Primary Schools aimed at trying to change those perceptions. Through enabling Schools to take part in exciting UK-wide investigations and seeing their results plotted on an interactive map.
The BBC Knowledge and Learning UXD team produced the UX, UI and visual design of the map. Taking into consideration that the data visualisation of the investigation results needed to resonate and deliver learning outcomes to a young audience, 9-11 year old primary school pupils.
The map enables pupils and teachers to interpret trends and correlations from the investigation data points.
During this project:
I was part of the pitching process for the agencies that designed the base map. Being one of the main BBC points of contact for the agency and art directing the initial design phase.
Led on the design of the data visualisation for each of the phase 1 experiments. Validating and adjusting the designs following design research.
Helped to organise and facilitate various design research sessions with children and teachers. This consisted of focus groups, lab testing, co-design and guerrilla testing.
Working closely with the UXD, Editorial, product, engineering teams, freelancers and external agencies to deliver the Terrific Scientific interactive map on time.

Illustration project I worked on for the Drygate Brewery in Glasgow, in collaboration with D8 Design Agency and the Glasgow School of Art.
I created a set of three illustrations that were inspired by the distinct flavours of the Drygate core beer range. My designs were used on the Gladeye IPA and the Ax Man Rye IPA.

I was part of a team of designers that worked on David McCandless' second book Knowledge is Beautiful, the sequel to the best selling Information is Beautiful.
This was an exciting project where I got to enhance my info-design skills and work with one of my design heroes. One of the stand-out visualisations I worked on was Best in Show
BBC iWonder is an informal learning product which was developed to change the way people use and interact with online content.
Aimed at users open to learning, BBC iWonder makes learning feel effortless and playful by waking the users natural curiosity with innovative guides and resources built around world-class BBC content.
My focus on the iWonder product was the infographic and data visualisation content being commissioned and produced by various teams across the UK. This involved:
Working with the iWonder editorial teams to concept, design and deliver infographic content.
Art directing infographic, data visualisation and motion graphic content, created by commercial agencies and freelance designers. This consisted of making sure the designs followed the iWonder style guide, information design best practices and had a strong narrative.
Future thinking for iWonder information design content, reviewing the current guidelines and looking at ways the evolve them.
Review and seek to improve the information design output for the BBC iWonder site.
Data visualisation I designed for, a Sticky Content client, the Post Office. The visualisation charts the Post Office's yearly Worldwide Holiday Costs data.
This project was long-listed in the Information is Beautiful Awards 2014 in the data visualisation category
During the coverage of the 2016 Olympics I was asked to help support the BBC Sport editorial design team. Working with them one day a week, during this very busy period.
I worked alongside other editorial designers and journalists to create infographics for articles and to share on social media channels.
We also designed a series of sport banners using BBC GEL iconography and BBC Olympic branding.
To support the content production for a BBC iWonder Instagram account, I led on the creation of a set of guidelines for Instagram formatted iWonder infographics.
As a starting point I consulted with the BBC Visual Journalism team on what guidelines they already had for social infographic production. Combining this knowledge with the existing iWonder infographic guidelines I started to develop an iWonder specific set of Instagram guidelines.
I then created a series of draft infographics using a mix of new content and some pre-existing infographics. These were then posted to a test Instagram account to review typography hierarchy, positioning, readability, illustration layout options and logo placement. The test account was shared with the Knowledge & Learning UXD and Editorial teams for feedback.
After developing an initial draft of the guidelines, I ran a workshop to get feedback from my UX Design colleagues. Then adjusted the guidelines accordingly from the feedback to deliver the final draft.
Poster I was asked to design for the Ballot Scotland propaganda exhibition.
Ballot Scotland was an apolitical propaganda poster exhibition that took place on the run up to the Scottish Referendum.
Mapping infographic I researched and designed for the Press Association's Diamond Jubilee coverage.
The visualisations maps the Queen's connection to the commonwealth countries through data.
The graphic was long-listed in the Information is Beautiful Awards 2012
